Justin Bieber and Mark Wahlberg are still waiting for the tip-off of their basketball drama, which is undergoing a script rewrite, according to the tween sensation.
“I don’t know what the deal is,” said Bieber when quizzed on the delays by MTV News. “Turns out they’re rewriting the script or something, trying to make it fit better and stuff.”
Wahlberg, who is likely to play the grizzled coach to Bieber’s young slam-dunker, had previously compared the film to Martin Scorsese’s The Color of Money, in which Paul Newman’s veteran pool shark teaches young buck Tom Cruise how to cue up a victory on the felt. “[I got] this call from Paramount [with a story about] an old guy and a young guy,” Wahlberg told MTV News last December. “I’m like, ‘Cool, let’s get Jack [Nicholson]. Let’s get Robert De Niro. Let’s get Robert Duvall.’ And they go, ‘What about Garrett Hedlund?’ I’m like, ‘For what?’ They’re like, ‘For the young guy.’”
It’s the first time that Bieber will be expected to take the lion’s share of acting duties. The pop star’s screen credits to date include brief appearances on CSI, Never Say Never – a 2011 concert documentary that showed The Bieb shooting hoops with his buddies backstage – and a guest role in the forthcoming Men in Black III, in which he will play an alien.
Bieber’s basketball skills, while occasionally good enough to challenge the world’s best, have previously been found wanting by critics on Youtube. “His shooting stance and form is awful,” said Youtube user papayatomica under a video of Bieber playing with retired basketball star Shaquille O’Neal. “No strength at all. I could block it with my head … LOL.”
